Scientist

We are looking for a capable and motivated candidate to join our research on integrated quantum and nonlinear photonics. The project aims to develop an integrated quantum photonic platform based on thin-film lithium niobate. Main device components to be developed include on-chip photon-pair sources, electro-optic modulators, frequency combs, and integrated superconducting single-photon detectors. The candidate will also have the freedom to explore other topics such as piezo-optomechanics, microwave-optical transduction, and superconducting circuits. 


This position resides in the Quantum Technologies for Engineering (QTE) Department at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). Successful candidates will be involved in, but not limited to, the following activities. 

  • Design and fabrication of integrated photonic devices

  • Developing electrical poling process for lithium niobate

  • Performing optical and electrical characterization of fabricated devices


Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, or other relevant fields.

  • Experience in nano/micro-fabrication 

  • Knowledge in nonlinear and/or quantum photonics

  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB)

  • Ability to work as a team and communicate effectively

Specialist

Closing date: Oct 31, 2022

We are looking for a motivated Research Specialist to join our research on integrated quantum photonics. The project aims to develop integrated quantum light sources and detectors on a hybrid platform that combines lithium niobate nonlinear photonics and superconducting electronics. This platform will enable many highly desirable functionalities in quantum information applications, such as on-chip entanglement generation, microwave-optical transduction, and optical readout of superconducting devices.


This position resides in the Quantum Technologies for Engineering (QTE) Department at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). Successful candidates will be involved in the following activities. 


  • Characterization of integrated photonic devices, including loss and quality-factor measurement

  • Material processing and inspection, including poling of lithium niobate crystal followed by domain imaging

  • Assisting in fabrication of photonic and microwave devices

  • Organization and procurement of laboratory supplies and components


JOB REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, material science, or other relevant fields

  • Basic knowledge in optics or electronics

  • Basic programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB)

  • Ability to communicate and work closely with team members  

  • Past experience in the job activities listed above is preferred, but a strong willingness to learn is sufficient. Trainings will be provided.

  • Ability to work as a team and communicate effectively

Specialist

We are searching for a highly motivated individual who is able to work independently and within a team to help with data acquisition and hardware programming. He/she will also be tasked with designing opto-mechanical components and working with our team to build and characterize atomic magnetometers capable of measuring magnetic fields about 10 parts per billion smaller than Earth's magnetic field to enable diverse applications ranging from brain imaging, explosives detection, and even searches for exotic physics.

  • Familiarity with programming and data acquisition

  • A passion and zeal for learning and trying out new ideas in lab

  • Ability to communicate and work well in a team

Scientist

Closing Date: Sep 27, 2022

We are looking for an experimental research scientist to join the development of an integrated quantum photonics platform, with a focus on integrated single-photon detectors. The scientist will be heavily involved in developing the device designs, building up our opto-electronics testing capabilities, and eventual device packaging and deployment. The successful candidate will work on the following:

  • Design and develop photonics-integrated photodetectors and other silicon photonics devices

  • Perform and/or oversee device fabrication processes

  • Design, construct, and automate opto-electronic test stations for device testing

  • Experimentally characterize fabricated devices (bare chips and packaged devices)

  • Design and integrate control circuitry for operating integrated single-photon detector devices

  • Integrate, develop, and test a wider integrated quantum photonics platform

Job Requirements

  • Relevant PhD degree in a Physics or Engineering field

  • Background in experimental optics and/or electronics

  • Able to independently plan and execute research work

  • Ability to program (especially Python) lab equipment for testing automation

  • Direct experience with photonics/photodetectors is desirable

  • Familiarity with circuit/PCB design, high-speed electronics, mechanical design, and machining is desirable

  • Ability to communicate and work closely with team members
